I have just had an experience in hospital where I informed the hospital that my elderly mother’s wishes were to be resuscitated where possible if she experienced a life threatening event.
To my shock the doctor that I informed wrote down “Not to be resuscitated”despite this conversation. I complained about this and was told that this was a common (but illegal and unethical) practice and occurred in about 50% involving elderly patients.
The only way to ensure this does not happen is to complete an Advance Care order and provide to EVERY hospital your elderly family member is admitted to. I will soon provide a comprehensive template for those who may require one.
