Anyone know the definition of what home and contents public liability covers? wondering if it covers damage to a neighbours property that was caused by something done by the insured? Does it have to be personal injury or is property damage and loss of wages covered if we make a claim again their public liability cover? thanks.

Public liability covers matters that any member of the public may sue you for. eg a branch from a tree in your yard falls on a person, they sue you. The public liability insurance fights the case for you and if they lose they pay the penalty.

so if the fire started in the neighbours house and spread to ours, we can make a claim on the public liability cover they have through their building and contents cover for our losses?

You would need to prove that the fire started through their negligence. The fire may have spread because of poor building regulations, weather conditions or just sheer bad luck.

The normal procedure is to make a claim through your own insurance company and let them pursue any recovery action against your neighbour.   That's what you pay your insurance premiums for.
