I work in a building that doesnt have a fire door there is one exit and entry.........the other night the late staff where locked in due to a power surge and the doors wouldnt open the fire brigade had to be called and a cherry picker had to bring them down from the roof......my question is dont we have a right to feel safe at work? not in a death trap if a fire was to start and what can we do about it??
You should have an OH&S staff representative, and should bring this matter up with them, the absence of a fire door is not necessarily significant, depending on the layout of the building, but the absence of a release mechanism on the main doors, is certainly a hazard.
You need to not only feel safe but also be safe. If nothing happens after talking to the OH&S a call to the union or a complaint to the relevant state government department and the chief of the local fire station is in order.
Take a look at the NSW OH&S regulations click here.

Worksafe are a good company to contact, they can audit your workplace and will then work with management to ensure everything is up to scratch. The local council your workplace is located in may also be able to help, it is their responsibility to ensure all buildings are kept up to code.
