I don't know if this happens in the real world in Australia, but in the movies, many times police found finger prints in the crime scene, but the don't get a hit on the database. How is that possible? Doesn't the government record all fingerprints of Australian citizens? like here in Indonesia, all citizens are required to renew their ID cards every 5 years where finger prints are recorded. Don't they record finger prints everytime Australians renew their ID cards?

Quick answer is no, Australians only have their fingerprints taken if they come into serious contact with the law. Others may know of some instances where finger prints are taken for biometric security purposes but these would not be on a national database for law enforcement use.

And further to that, in Australia, we do not have ID cards. Usually a drivers licence is used to identify people, it contains their photo, address, and signature, but not any fingerprint record.

wow, this is a surprise. Why doesn't Australian government record finger prints of Australian citizen? wouldn't it make crime investigation a lot easier? Or is it considered violation of privacy like DNA sampling? and also let's say an Australian doesn't own any vehicle nor does he/she want to go abroad, thus no driver's license or passport, how do Australian government identify him/her? don't you have some sort of citizen identification?

There are many ways to prove who you are. But a proposal for a national identity card, to be called the Australia Card, failed to get through parliament in 1987 and despite calls for its reintroduction, it has not happened. It is only legal for police to keep fingerprint and DNA records for convicted criminals. There is no such database for ordinary law abiding citizens, which everyone is presumed to be, till they are convicted of something.
