Is it true that if someone is on centrelink benefits they can obtain legal aid for free?

Chance are legal aid would be a possibility. However legal aid will not represent both parties so the one who applies first with a good case will be assisted.

Remember legal aid will deduct their fees from any property settlement that occurs.

Even on benefits I believe you are required to contribute something, it is also means tested, so even though you may be on benefits, if you have a certain value of assets, you may be denied. Also as MartinO has said, you can be required to pay out of settlement, the sale of a home or other assets.

Any opinion given should not be accepted as legal advice.
