allied health service - appointment cancellation

Many of these service providers have a policy of the requirement of full payment for a service if cancellation is made within a period of 24hours of the appointment. I understand why they do this, but can this be upheld if legally challenged?
A partial fee penalty would be more understandable but by charging the full amount they are including their profit margin for not having provided any service at all - that's just greed and really irritates me.
