Topic: Copyright Question

Looking for some help!
I've read somebody's novel online which is protected by copyright.
I've been unable to contact this person to have a discussion, but I was hoping to use the premise of the story and create a screenplay.
If I gave full credit to the original in a "based off novel titled blah blah blah written by blah blah blah", do I have any legal protection or would this still be a breach of copyright???
Please let me know.
