Hello, I am in this situation that I need a copy of my Australian citizenship certificate to apply for a travel passport. To get a copy of my citizenship certificate I need to provide my birth certificate.

The problem is that I was born overseas and moved to Australia as a refugee and I never had a birth certificate. However, I have every other documents (medicare, driver's license, tax file number etc), because I was using my visa document for identification. But I don't have the document anymore, it was lost.

I called the DIAC regarding this and they said that I need to submit a statutory declaration and they linked me to the site (

Have anybody been in a similar situation? What kind of statements do I write for the statutory declaration?

My father lost his citizenship certificate, and has to jump through a few hoops to provide the necessary proof that he had receive a certificate.

I don't remember the precise details. But in the end he was issued with a certificate that stated he had been issued with a citizenship certificate on some date. He could use this to obtain a passport. Apparently they do not reissue citizenship certificates.

I am NOT a lawyer. Anything said is NOT legal advice.

Please post your legal questions in a forum rather than sending a PM. Thanks.
